As more families are faced with making difficult decisions regarding a senior’s health and safety, many times these decisions are left until a crisis occurs such as a chronic disease being diagnosed or a senior suffers an injury. These families are making decisions under stress since there is no time to map out a well thought out plan of action so their plan is one of reaction.

- Family arguments can occur because some family members may not agree on a course of action
- The senior refuses to go along with the plan because they want to maintain their independence regardless of their safety and/or the safety of others
